Champion  racehorse trainer Richard Hannon’s team of four Wiltshire  farriers have won the ‘Victory (L to R) Farriers Andy Ford, Mark Hewlett, Richard Alford and Bert Newman with their victory magnums and Canford CliffsMagnum’ for the first time, following the stable’s hugely successful 2010 season.

The Victory Magnum is awarded by Atlantic Equine Ltd,  importers of Victory aluminium racing plates, to the farrier or farriers plating the most Group 1 winners in Victory plates in Britain, Ireland and France over any one season.

This year, farriers Richard Alford, Mark Hewlett, Andy Ford and Bert Newman swept the board with five victories from Canford Cliffs (Irish 2000 Guineas, St James Palace Stakes, Sussex Stakes), Paco Boy (Lockinge Stakes) and Dick Turpin (Prix Jean Prat).

They were presented with their magnums of champagne, each inscribed with their names and the colours of one of the three horses, by Tony Lindsell, a director of Atlantic Equine, at the trainer’s Herridge yard near Collingbourne Ducis on Wednesday 17 November.

“I am absolutely delighted that these guys have won the Victory Magnum this year,” said Tony Lindsell. “Not only have they been excellent customers for something like twenty years, going back to when Brian Alford, Richard’s father, was shoeing at the yard himself, but also they represent an absolute wealth of experience and history in racing in this part of the world, so it is great to be able to recognise that in this small way.”

Lead farrier Richard Alford  commented: “It’s a great privilege to shoe such good horses, so we really have to thank Richard Hannon and his whole team, and of course the horses,  for this award.”

The four farriers  all live in and around Wilton, near Salisbury, and are proud to prove that the winner of the Victory Magnum does not have to come from one of the big racing centres such as Newmarket, Lambourn or Tipperary.

“We’ve been trying to win this for years. We’ve always been up there with the number of winners, but we’ve never had  enough Group 1 horses at the same time until this year,” said Mark Hewlett. “See you next year,” he added, indicating that they have no intention of relinquishing  their crown in 2011.
